A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in public projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
