France will start stopping small boats in Channel after UK pressure
France has agreed to begin stopping small boats in the Channel, after months of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy follows the British leader sent a letter to the French leader asking him to back the initiative and stating there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to official confirmation.
French police have infrequently acted to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both officers and individuals.
"It is essential that we implement these methods this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson states personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.
Notably, the spokesperson ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been suggested as a possible technique to disable the propellers of the boats.
This determination to take action at all is a significant step forward, following a brief shift towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the previous government official departed from office.
This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the UK leader and President, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a boat.
Now French officials will again be allowed to intercept boats prior to they collect migrant individuals from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Strong winds are currently delaying the start of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for ways to adjust to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the past.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
