Tanzania Security Clampdown on Planned Protest Leaves Streets Deserted.
Security has been tightened across Tanzania with police and military seen patrolling key urban areas in anticipation of anticipated anti-government protests called to coincide with independence day.
As of noon, however, no protests had materialized.
Residents in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mbeya, Mwanza noted the day began with unusual quietness, with a large number opting to stay home amid uncertainty over if the demonstrations would proceed.
The protests were organized to call for changes to the political system in the wake of the unrest that followed last October's elections which resulted in an unconfirmed death toll.
Government Acknowledges Employing Force
Officials have conceded employing force against demonstrators, asserting that certain elements aimed to topple the government.
On Tuesday, reporters observed streets that were largely deserted in the business hub, Dar es Salaam. This stood in sharp contrast to the city's typical weekday activity.
The quiet was undercut by a persistent sense of tension.
Heightened Security Across Cities
Security vehicles were seen driving along major roads and intersections, while officers took up positions at key points, particularly near important public buildings and facilities.
On social media, activists and campaigners urged followers to remain vigilant, suggesting any demonstrations were unlikely to begin until the afternoon. This communication mirrored previous protest calls in Tanzania, when participation grew as the day progressed.
Drivers who went out experienced regular stops at security checkpoints, where police interrogated motorists about their destinations.
Government Stance and Prohibitions
The government has not issued specific statements on the increased security or on the planned protests.
Tanzanian authorities have banned the intended demonstrations and cancelled independence day celebrations, urging citizens to stay indoors.
"The prevailing mood is one of quiet tension as people choose to stay home."
The day's events depicted a nation on edge, where the threat of protest led to a security clampdown in advance that left conspicuously quiet normally bustling cities.
